LEADING OFF
Flaky Play
Titans quarterback Vince Young (10) chased down a fumble in the snow during the fourth quarter of Tennessee's 59--0 loss to the Patriots in Foxborough, Mass., on Sunday. Young, who replaced Kerry Collins with 11 seconds left in the third quarter, threw one incomplete pass and one interception, and the Titans were held to minus-seven passing yards in the most lopsided NFL game in 33 years. The weather didn't faze New England's Tom Brady, who threw for 380 yards and six touchdowns.
Full Plate
Trying to score in the fifth inning of Game 1 of the American League Championship Series at Yankee Stadium last Friday, New York's Alex Rodriguez knocked over Angels catcher Jeff Mathis, who tagged him out. The Yankees won 4--1; the following night the Bombers won 4--3 in 13 innings behind the heroics of the Yankees' third baseman (page 38).
Swamp Dive
Arkansas wideout Greg Childs lunged past Florida cornerback Joe Haden last Saturday but couldn't hold on to the pass, which would have given the Razorbacks a first-and-goal in the third quarter. The Gators edged Arkansas 23--20 in the Swamp on Caleb Sturgis's 27-yard field goal with nine seconds left and were No. 1 in the first BCS rankings, released on Sunday.
Flexible Flier
An airborne Bridget Sloan of the U.S. extended her legs elastically as she performed on the uneven bars during the all-around finals at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in London last Friday. Sloan, a 17-year-old high school junior from Pittsboro, Ind., won the all-around gold medal after her 16-year-old teammate Rebecca Bross of Plano, Texas, fell on her last tumbling pass in the floor exercise and dropped to second place.
