What smart fans should do this week

• WATCH

Texas vs. Oklahoma State

The Cowboys fell out of the national title conversation after a shocking loss to Houston. They'll feel a whole lot more relevant if they upset the No. 3 Longhorns at home on Halloween (check listings). Good news for the hosts: Star running back Kendall Hunter may return from an ankle injury for this one.

• WATCH

Falcons vs. Saints

New Orleans is undefeated, and on a Monday night the Superdome will be deafening. Don't expect Atlanta QB Matt Ryan to be rattled, though. He's again among the league's top passers, plus he has been sacked only six times, tied for second-fewest among QBs who have started all their teams' games.

• READ

When the Game Was Ours

You can't get more opposite than Magic Johnson and Larry Bird: black-white, L.A.-Boston, Showtime-scrappy. But the stars became friends as well as rivals, and they sat with former SI writer Jackie MacMullan to tell war stories and discuss the NBA. The result: a behind-the-scenes look at a bygone era, and a terrific read.

• WATCH

New York City Marathon

Keep an eye on Ryan Hall on Sunday (NBC), when the Great American Marathon Hope runs New York for the first time. A U.S. male hasn't won since 1982. On the women's side, three-time champ Paula Radcliffe defends her title. Sign of the times: Runners will get hand sanitizer, to ward off the H1N1 bug, before the race.

• RUN

The Skirt Chaser 5K

No, it's not a race honoring Wilt Chamberlain. These flirtatious 5K's—there's one in Savannah this Saturday and in San Francisco on Nov. 15—give women a three-minute head start. Male runners chase, and everyone mingles over drinks at the finish. Details are at skirtchaser5k.com.
