LEADING OFF
Wildcat Strike
Louisville guard Jerry Smith took a shot as he took a shot from Villanova forward Antonio Pe√±a in Louisville on Jan. 11. Smith was held to just five points—while Wildcats guard Scottie Reynolds erupted for 36—in the Cardinals' 92--84 loss. At week's end Villanova was 16--1 and ranked No. 4, while Louisville dropped to 12--6.
Duck Hunting
Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid obliterated Ducks right wing Troy Bodie, a recent call-up, with a second-period check on Jan. 13 in Anaheim. Boston ended the period up by a goal, but the Ducks scored twice in the third for a 4--3 victory. Anaheim had won six of its last seven games through Sunday.
Top of the Whirl
Caitlin Yankowskas got a good turn from her partner, John Coughlin, performing a twist lift during the pairs competition at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships last Saturday in Spokane. The duo finished second in the short program but sixth overall, and they did not earn one of the two Olympic berths.
