LEADING OFF
One Scoop For Two
On his way down, Vermont guard Maurice Joseph had a wide-eyed view of Syracuse guard Scoop Jardine's layup in a first-round NCAA tournament game last Friday in Buffalo. The Orange, top seeded in the West region, routed the No. 16 Catamounts 79--56 and two days later spanked Gonzaga 87--65 to advance to the Sweet 16 (page 28).
Blowing Through
Miami leadoff hitter Frankie Ratcliff sent Fordham shortstop Brian Kownacki flying head over heels while stealing second base in their March 16 game in Coral Gables, Fla. Ratcliff was stranded and the 11th-ranked Hurricanes lost to the Rams 4--3, but he stole two more bases and scored three times in a 9--8 win the following night as the teams split the series.
Fire Escape
Neither driver was injured after the number 66 Toyota driven by Steve Wallace and the 16 Ford of rookie Colin Braun collided on the 90th lap of the Nationwide Series race last Saturday in Bristol, Tenn. Justin Allgaier, 23, held off Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski to get the first Nationwide victory of his career.
