More than 275 million golf balls are sold every year in the U.S., but they don't leave the store in a steady flow. Sales build slowly toward late spring and early summer—the height of the corporate outing, family vacation season. It's the time of year when casual duffers are most likely to tee it up, and avid players are running out of the supply they bought earlier in the year. Then there are all the balls lost during the U.S. Open.
