LEADING OFF
Tools Shed
Headgear and eyewear flew when Mariners leftfielder Eric Byrnes was tagged out by Tigers catcher Alex Avila during the second inning of their game in Seattle on Sunday. Second baseman Scott Sizemore gunned down Byrnes at the plate as he tried to score from second on a single. Detroit won 4--2.
Second Look
Braves second baseman Martin Prado peered through the legs of his Padres counterpart, Jerry Hairston Jr., to see if he had broken up a fifth-inning double play in San Diego last Thursday. (He had.) Atlanta won 6--2 on the day that major league baseball celebrated Jackie Robinson on the 63rd anniversary of his breaking the color barrier. All players wore Robinson's number, 42.
Field of Honor
Members of Chattanooga's Howard High baseball team warmed up in the city's historic Engel Stadium last Thursday before a game against Richard Hardy Memorial School from South Pittsburg, Tenn. The 12,000-seat park, which celebrated its 80th birthday on the same day, has one of the deepest centerfields (471 feet) in the country. Until 1999 Engel was the home of the Double A Chattanooga Lookouts, and over the years it has hosted such legends as Rogers Hornsby, Satchel Paige, Willie Mays and Henry Aaron. Howard will play all its home games at Engel while its field is repaired.
