For the Record

By a muscle tear in her left foot, which may prevent her from competing at the French Open, Kim Clijsters. The former world No. 1 has battled injuries throughout her tennis career and cited the frequent setbacks when she retired in 2007, after which she and her husband, Brian Lynch, had a daughter, Jada Ellie. Clijsters returned in '09 and one month later triumphed at the U.S. Open (above), making her the first unranked and unseeded woman since 1968, and the first mother since Evonne Goolagong-Cawley in 1980, to win a Grand Slam event. Last Saturday, during a singles match at the Fed Cup in Brussels, the current WTA No. 11 said she felt pain in her foot; tests later revealed a tear on the instep. Clijsters withdrew from the event and is expected to take six weeks to recover. The French Open begins on May 23.

From Saturday's running of the 136th Kentucky Derby, likely favorite Eskendereya. The 3-year-old was slated to work out at Churchill Downs on Sunday in anticipation of the Run for the Roses, but trainer Todd Pletcher called off that exercise after noticing swelling in his horse's left front leg, which he likened to a sprained ankle in a human being. Eskendereya, who had been compared favorably to 2008 Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown, was thought to have a good shot at breaking Pletcher's 0-for-24 streak at Churchill, but that didn't keep owner Ahmed Zayat from pulling the plug early. "[Ahmed] says the horse comes first," Pletcher said on Sunday. "He's not going to do anything to take any chances."

Of unknown causes at age 48, Rockies president Keli McGregor, who was in his 17th season with the club. A mainstay in the Denver sporting community, the 6'7" McGregor made his name in football, first at Lakewood High, then as a tight end at Colorado State, where he was an All-America in 1984. (He was inducted into CSU's Hall of Fame in '97.) McGregor was drafted by the Broncos in the fourth round in '85 and later played for the Colts. He then began climbing the collegiate management ranks at Arkansas (as associate AD under Frank Broyles) and Florida (as a football assistant). In '93 McGregor joined the Rockies' front office, in which, while performing his executive duties, he also won a reputation as a gym rat. "I'm stunned," manager Jim Tracy said of McGregor's death. "I told the players in the clubhouse: 'I want to understand this, but I don't.'"

By Major League Baseball following his positive test for a performance-enhancing drug, Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez (above). The 26-year-old righthander was an All-Star in 2008 when he went 17--6 with a 3.21 ERA and finished second in the NL with 206 strikeouts, but he injured his pitching arm after seven outings in '09 and was on the DL last week following off-season Tommy John surgery. On April 20 MLB announced that Volquez had tested positive for an unidentified substance, which the pitcher later described as a prescription fertility medication that he'd taken in his native Dominican Republic. Volquez, who wasn't expected back on the mound until midseason, will be allowed to serve the suspension on the DL, but he won't be paid during that time, costing him roughly $134,000.

For the first six games of 2010, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who was accused of—but not charged with—sexual assault by a 20-year-old female college student on March 5 in Milledgeville, Ga. On April 21, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell deemed Roethlisberger's actions that night had violated the league's personal-conduct policy and ordered the two-time Super Bowl winner to undergo a comprehensive behavioral evaluation while he sat out. (Roethlisberger's lawyer has said he believes the commissioner considered an eight- to 10-game ban; instead Goodell left the door open for a return after four.) The announcement came one day after Pittsburgh, anticipating the suspension, traded a seventh-round pick to reacquire former Steelers QB Byron Leftwich, and one day before the start of the NFL draft, during which the team is reported to have shopped its starter of six years. On Monday, Roethlisberger issued a statement in which he apologized and promised not to appeal, adding, "I have fallen short of the values instilled in me by my family.... I will not put myself in this situation again."

Beginning in 2011 by two television partners, CBS and Turner Broadcasting (a division of Time Warner, which also owns SI), the TV rights to the NCAA men's basketball tournament for the next 14 years. The agreement, which comes with an expansion to 68 teams—as opposed to the proposed 96-team field floated by NCAA senior VP Greg Shaheen during this year's tournament—calls for the two media outlets to air every game live on CBS, TBS, TNT or truTV. (CBS gets the regional finals until 2016, at which point it will enter a rotation with TBS.) The deal, worth $10.8 billion (or a yearly average of $740 million for schools and conferences), now needs final approval by the D-I Board of Directors, which is due to meet on April 29.
