LEADING OFF
Fencing Lesson
Following his Kentucky Derby--winning playbook, jockey Calvin Borel guided Super Saver along the rail early in the 136th Run for the Roses last Saturday in Louisville. Borel ventured outside only briefly on his way to a 2½-length victory over Ice Box on the rain-soaked track. It was Borel's third Derby victory in the last four years, and the first for Super Saver's trainer, Todd Pletcher, in 28 tries (page 28).
Chalk One Up
A's outfielder Ryan Sweeney just beat the tag by Rays catcher John Jaso during the third inning of their game in St. Petersburg on April 27. The Rays won 8--6 to improve their record to 15--5, the best start in franchise history. At week's end Tampa Bay was 18--7 and led the American League East by 1½ games (page 40).
Skull Session
Celtics forward Kevin Garnett, sticking to his pregame ritual, gave a nod to a basket stanchion before Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals last Saturday in Cleveland. Garnett scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, but the Cavaliers prevailed 101--93 (page 46).
