ON THE NUMBER

Public vs. Private

The 30th anniversary of Caddyshack raised the question: Which group loves the game more, snobs or slobs? If frequency of play is the measure, country clubbers rule. Club members make up a tiny portion of the 27.1 million golfers in the U.S., less than 1%. Yet they account for 22% of the 486 million rounds played annually. Economics and access are obvious factors in the equation, but by the percentages alone private trumps public.
