THE BLAME TO BEAT
A 4-year-old colt named Blame won his fifth race in a row at the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga last Saturday, making him an early Breeders' Cup fave. In other blame-centric news NFL ref Bill Leavy bit the bullet last week, admitting that two of his wrong calls hurt the Seahawks in Super Bowl XL.
POWERS HAWKS SHOES
Obnoxious? Yup. But he's our kind of jerk. Kenny Powers—he of HBO's post-baseball-career comedy, Eastbound and Down (actor Danny McBride in real life, right)—is bloody brilliant as the pitchman for K-Swiss's Tubes shoes, which, he boasts, have "enough support to melt your face off."
YOUNG STUDS
The 17-whiff near no-hitter on Sunday by Toronto's Brandon Morrow, 26, speaks to the profusion of fresh major league arms. See also: Reds rookie reliever Logan Ondrusek (21 straight scoreless innings) and Cubs newbie Thomas Diamond (10 K's in his debut).
Who's Not
BLAME THE HEAT
Temps boiled at NFL camps, where 90° conditions (and a bad knee) resulted in two failed conditioning tests by Albert Haynesworth (left), and in Finland, where a finalist at the World Sauna Championships died. Also not cool: the Heat, who canned the ticket staff that sold out Miami's 2010--11 season.
HAWKS LOSE POWER
So much for the honeymoon. Less than two months after winning the Cup, the cap-strapped Blackhawks decided that goalie Antti Niemi (who started every game of the playoffs) was too pricey, making him the ninth Chicago player cut loose by a team that, according to owner Rocky Wirtz, operates in the red.
CAREENING COLTS
Rookie Colt McCoy needed taming after throwing two INTs in his first Browns scrimmage. Colts DL John Gill, 23, was arrested for intoxication. (Charges were dropped.) And being young and equine was hair-raising: Broncos QB Tim Tebow (left) got scalped in rookie hazing.
