Who's Hot
YANKEES SANS A-ROD
Who needs a three-time MVP when you've got Robinson Cano? Sunday's 10--0 drubbing of Seattle kept the Bombers perfect with Alex Rodriguez on the bench this year. In the 12 games A-Rod has missed, Cano is slugging .979 with seven homers and 22 RBIs—including six in Sunday's win.
WES WELKER
The fleet Patriots wideout apparently does everything fast. He returned to the field last Saturday, less than seven months after surgery to repair a torn left ACL, and caught passes on his first two plays. "It's something I worked my tail off to get to this whole off-season," he said.
PIRATES BOTTOM LINE
Ah, revenue sharing! Despite ranking in the middle of the pack in attendance over the past three years, the Bucs revealed that they have turned a tidy profit of $34.8 million during that span. Of course, it helps that this year's Opening Day payroll was an MLB-low $34.9 million.
ARJUN ATWAL
The 37-year-old journeyman became the first Indian-born player to win a PGA Tour event, at the Wyndham Championship on Sunday. Just getting there was a chore: Atwal had to play his way into the field in the Monday qualifying tournament because he lost his Tour card last month.
Who's Not
RANGERS WITH LEE
Texas is cruising in spite of the deal that landed the team Cliff Lee, not because of it. The lefty has been roughed up in his last three starts—all Rangers losses—and he gave up a career-high four homers to the punchless Orioles last Saturday. The Rangers are 3--6 in Lee's starts but still have an eight-game lead in the West.
JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO
The reigning U.S. Open champ wasn't so quick to recover from his injury. A bum right wrist, which has kept him off the court since January, forced him to withdraw from the Open. Del Porto is just the third champion in the 42-year Open era not to attempt to defend his title.
PIRATES STAT LINE
You get what you pay for. A loss to the Mets on Friday clinched an 18th straight losing season for Pittsburgh—the longest such streak in American pro sports history. That's what happens when you rank last in the league in runs and next to last in ERA.
NENAD KRSTIC
The Serbia (and Thunder) center spent last Thursday night in an Athens jail after he threw a chair at a Greek player during a brawl in the Acropolis tournament. "Relations with the Greeks are now very bad," said Serbia coach Dusan Ivkovic. Ya think so?
