PRESSED DUCK During a Pac-10 showdown in Eugene, Ore., last Saturday, Oregon quarterback Darron Thomas was flattened at the Washington one-yard line by Huskies cornerback Quinton Richardson, who was called for a face-mask penalty. The Ducks won 53--16 to strengthen their hold on the top BCS ranking (page 42).

GRACE, KELLY Kelly Slater of the U.S. artfully carved an arc through a wave as he secured his 10th ASP world title by defeating Adriano de Souza of Brazil in the quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Pro Search Puerto Rico last Saturday in Rincón, P.R. Slater would go on to win the event and a total of $175,000 by beating Australia's Bede Durbidge in the final.

MASS TRANSIT Runners streamed across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge from Staten Island to Brooklyn on Sunday at the start of the 41st New York City Marathon. A total of 45,350 runners began the race, and 44,829 finished. The men's winner was Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia, in 2:08:14, and the women's champ was Edna Kiplagat of Kenya, in 2:28:20.

FROM THE VAULT BOOT CALL The Bears and the Packers lined up before the goalposts as Chicago kicker Bob Jencks toed an extra-point attempt during a game at Wrigley Field on Nov. 17, 1963. The Bears won 26--7. Chicago would go on to win the Western Conference and take the NFL championship by beating the Giants 14--10 in the title game.
