TaylorMade's white R11 driver has more positions than a yoga instructor
TaylorMade's new R11 driver catches the eye with its bright white crown, but the club is really all about flexibility because players can adjust the weighting, face angle and loft. In all, the R11 is capable of 48 setups, which account for up to 100 yards of side-to-side trajectory adjustment, a launch-angle range of 2° and spin variation of 1,000 rpm. Here's how it works.
1. Two adjustable perimeter weights allow a golfer to set up for three ball-flight paths. More weight in the heel promotes a draw; more weight in the toe encourages a fade; a balanced setup results in a neutral orientation.
2. An aluminum alloy shaft tip with small teeth mesh with similar teeth in the clubhead. Turning the head causes the teeth to interlock in different positions and tilts the head, altering the loft.
3. Any loft change alters the face angle. (Adding loft closes the face; decreasing loft opens it.) The R11 counteracts that influence through a plate on the bottom of the club. Twisting the plate changes the profile of the sole so that the club sits on the ground in more open, closed or neutral positions.
