Mark Jones
SUMMIT, N.J. > Indoor Track and Field
Mark, a senior at Summit High, high-jumped 7'0" at the Group 2 Relays to tie the Union County indoor record and become part of the first father-son tandem to jump seven feet in high school; his father, Bob, also cleared that height as a senior at East New Brunswick High in 1977. Last year, Mark won the New Balance Nationals outdoor title with a jump of 6'10¾.
Kayla Kiernan
NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. > Ice Hockey
Kayla, a senior center and captain at North Smithfield High, scored four times in a 5--2 victory over Cranston Co-op to become the state's first girl to reach 100 goals. The game took place hours after her father had suffered a minor stroke. Her first goal gave Kayla the career record in Rhode Island; her last took her to the century mark. Kayla was named all-state last year.
Conor White
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLA. > Rowing
Conor, a senior and co-captain at The Bolles School, won the 2,000-meter men's high school lightweight category at the Southern Sprints indoor rowing race in Melbourne, Fla., with a time of 6:31. In 2009 and '10 he earned a combined five gold medals in national and international competition as a member of U.S. Rowing's junior national development team.
Tyra Buss
MOUNT CARMEL, ILL. > Basketball
Tyra, a freshman guard at Mount Carmel High, scored 32 points in a loss to Teutopolis High to become the first freshman girl in Illinois history to surpass 1,000 points in a single season; her 1,025 points at season's end is the state's fifth-highest girls' single-season points total. In January she broke her school record for points in a game with 52 in a victory over F.J. Reitz High.
A.J. Zemke
OSHKOSH, WIS. > Wrestling
A.J., a senior at Lourdes High, won the 145-pound title at the Oshkosh On the Water Classic, beating his final opponent in sudden-death triple overtime. Through Sunday, he was 48--0 and had extended his winning streak to 77 matches. In 2010, A.J. was the state's Division III 135-pound champion and a member of the winning Greco-Roman junior nationals team.
Shannon Foreman
CHARLOTTE > Swimming
Shannon, a junior at Ardrey Kell High, led the Knights to their first Southwestern 4A title, winning the 50- and 100-yard freestyles. With her team trailing by nine points going into the final event, Shannon anchored the 4 √ó 100 free relay, finishing first by .09 of a second to clinch a 568--565 victory and snap rival Providence High's 19-year conference-title winning streak.
