DUKE SNIDER 1926--2011 As Dodgers catcher Roy Campanella (leaning on bat) watched from the dugout steps, the Duke broke from the plate after connecting with a Jim Hearn pitch against the Giants at New York City's Polo Grounds on May 26, 1956. Snider, who died of natural causes at a convalescent hospital in Escondido, Calif., on Sunday, hit .295 with 407 home runs during his 18-year Hall of Fame career and helped bring Brooklyn its only World Series title, in 1955.
