TECH TALK

A New Mix

Lamborghini and the University of Washington helped Callaway develop its latest breakthrough

A new material, called forged composite, uses bundles of carbon fibers and a special resin to create a gel that can be poured into a mold. The resulting material, according to Callaway, is lighter and stronger than titanium. And since the composite is forged, Callaway can better control the thickness, which allows for even greater weight savings.

The fibers, one inch long and thinner than a human hair, are turbostratic, which means the atoms are intertwined and aligned along the length of the strands.

The Diablo Octane driver (shown) has more than 10 million fibers in the crown. The RAZR Hawk driver has the composite in both the crown and the sole.

The composite contains 500,000 fibers per square inch.
