"I'm using the new Anser putter. It has a more solid feel, but the appearance is the main thing. It's shinier and more silvery. I flat out like the way it looks."

TECH TALK

ANTI FLYER

Wilson's FG Tour uses a clever combination of materials to provide better performance from the rough

LAST YEAR'S groove-rule change made it harder to control the ball out of the rough. The shallower, more rounded grooves are unable to channel away as much of the grass and moisture that get trapped between the ball and the clubface when hitting from the tall stuff. That means the ball comes out with less spin, leading to the dreaded flyer, so-called because the ball will travel an unpredictable distance but almost always farther than intended. The FG Tour holds its own against other balls in distance and spin around the greens, and its construction aims to help golfers regain some spin out of the rough.

A low-compression neodymium rubber core is relatively soft, so the ball will compress on impact.

A urethane cover, with an outer coating so soft it actually feels tacky, adds to the responsiveness.

A hard surlyn mid-layer provides a fast rebound off the clubface to provide distance.

The three layers work together so that the ball deforms substantially on impact. As it does, it covers more of the clubface and more of the grooves, resulting in more spin on the shot.
