TECH TALK
MOON SHOES
Nike's Lunar Control uses technology from across the company's range of sport-specific shoes to bring new tech to golf
FOR EACH of this year's majors Nike rolled out a specially designed version of the Lunar Control, so look for one featuring the blue and gold of the PGA of America's logo next week. Beyond the colors, the Lunar Control utilizes technology from the company's track, basketball and soccer lines to combine light weight and performance. According to Nike, each Lunar Control is three to four ounces lighter than a typical golf shoe, which multiplied out over every step for 18 holes equates to one ton less weight lifted by your legs over a typical round.
Instead of leather, the middle of the shoe is reinforced with high-tensile nylon fibers stitched into the material and then sealed with thermo polyurethane.
Crosswise and longitudinal channels allow the shoe to flex front to back and side to side so the sole stays on the ground longer, improving traction.
The pad in the heel uses two types of foam. One provides cushion, and the other stability and rebound that allows it to return energy to your foot on each step.
