TECH TALK
SPEED DEMON
Cleveland's Ultralite drivers are designed to eliminate weight and increase speed, no matter how you swing
GOLF CLUBS have gone on a diet. In the last few years new materials and techniques have allowed clubmakers to reduce weight yet maintain stability, which allows for greater swing speed and therefore more distance. The biggest jumps have come in lighter grips and shafts, where stiffer carbon fibers have allowed builders to maintain flex while using less material and glue. Cleveland has seized on the improvements to design drivers—the Ultralite series—that come in three weights so golfers can match their swing to the appropriate club. Manipulating the weight in the head maintains the overall balance and stability.
Rolled titanium sheets, 0.5 millimeter thick, are strong but lighter than castings, saving weight that can be used elsewhere.
A large neutral weight low in the center of the head increases stability. Its size and position balance the lighter components.
In some models the weight is moved closer to the hosel to create a draw bias that helps fight a slice.
