THROUGH THE QUACKS Rare was the defensive player who found his way into the picture of Monday's Rose Bowl in Pasadena, where Oregon and Wisconsin combined for 1,129 yards and broke the record for scoring. Badgers QB Russell Wilson hit pay dirt in the first quarter on a four-yard run, but the Ducks rallied to win 45--38 for their first Rose Bowl victory in 95 years.

SHADOW BOXING OUT Those shady figures angling for position in the paint last Saturday in Bloomington were Indiana and Ohio State players. The No. 12 Hoosiers, unranked in preseason polls, continued their revival with a 74--70 defeat of the then second-ranked Buckeyes, which came three weeks after IU's buzzer-beating upset of then No. 1 Kentucky.
