Reese, a senior pole vaulter at Spring High, cleared 17'6" to win the men's open at the Pole Vault Expo Explosion III indoor meet in Belton, Texas, for the No. 1 high school mark this season (through Sunday) and the third-highest indoor mark of all time. The defending Texas 5A state champion, Reese also won the pole vault title at the Great Southwest Classic outdoor meet last June with a height of 17'3".

CANDACE BROWN

HINTON, W.VA. > BASKETBALL

Candace, a 5'9" senior guard at Summers County High, scored 46 points to match her personal best and surpass 1,000 career points in a 74--49 win over Chapmanville. The team's sole returning starter, she is averaging 36.3 points through Sunday, helping the five-time defending state champion Bobcats continue the nation's longest active girls' basketball winning streak: 104, dating to January 2008.

MARK GREY

ROCKAWAY, N.J. > WRESTLING

Mark, a senior at Blair Academy, won the 132-pound class (4--2 over Bethlehem Catholic's Randy Cruz) at the six-round Beast of the East tournament at Delaware, becoming the first wrestler to win four titles in four years at the event. Voted the meet's outstanding wrestler, he was one of five Buccaneers to win his weight class to help Blair take the team title with 321.5 points, 142.5 more than the runner-up.

HILLARY PATTENDEN

SURREY, B.C. > ICE HOCKEY

Pattenden, a senior goaltender at fifth-ranked Mercyhurst, became the NCAA Division I alltime winningest goalie with her 92nd victory—and 17th career shutout—in a 9--0 win over Lindenwood. She had tied the record of 91 wins, set at Wisconsin by current U.S. Olympian Jessie Vetter, with a career-high 48 saves in the Lakers' previous victory, 3--2 in overtime against fourth-ranked Boston College.

JAYDON MICKENS

LOS ANGELES > FOOTBALL

Jaydon, a 5'11", 175-pound senior wideout at Dorsey High, was named MVP of the Marine Corps' inaugural Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl in Phoenix. He scored the West's first touchdown on a 14-yard catch and added a 33-yard run on a reverse to help defeat the East, 17--14. An all-city selection this fall, he had 1,530 total yards and 24 TDs for the Dorsey Dons, including four scores in the D-I city quarterfinal.

EMMA REANEY

LAWRENCE, KANS. > SWIMMING

Reaney, a freshman at Notre Dame, swam a 1:57.67 in the 200-yard individual medley to set a school and meet record at the Ohio State Invitational, where she also won the 400-yard IM (4:12.19). Reaney finished in the top four in seven events and through Sunday is 8--0 for the year in IM competition. In 2010, she qualified for the 2012 Olympic trials in the 100-meter breaststroke.

FUMBLE!

When Michele Bachmann withdrew from the Republican primary race on Jan. 4, days after an ad aired comparing her to Tim Tebow, the failed sports connection might have served as a warning to the other nominees. Alas, no such luck. During a GOP debate last Saturday, moderator George Stephanopoulos asked the field, "If you weren't here, what would you be doing on a Saturday night?" The awkwardness was palpable as Newt Gingrich answered "watching the college championship basketball game." Said Mitt Romney, "Afraid it's football." Rick Santorum tried a save, saying, "I'd be doing the same thing with my family." But which game was he talking about? The BCS title game was on Monday.
