TECH TALK
HEAD GAMES
Callaway arrived late to the adjustable driver category, but its Razr Fit brings innovation
WHEN CALLAWAY engineers first looked at adjustable heads for drivers, they liked the idea but didn't see how it could be done without giving up some accuracy and distance. The mechanics of the system added weight where it wasn't wanted, throwing off balance and causing a potential loss of speed. It took a few years, but Callaway finally found a way to make an adjustable head that performed to the company's expectations. The goals were achieved by using a proprietary forged composite to save grams in the body, which offsets the weight of the mechanical system.
The mass of the mounts for the adjustable weights is offset elsewhere in the head.
A more aerodynamic head design with a smaller face and rounded edges increases speed.
The hosel adjusts without turning the shaft, so it's possible to use a nonround shaft. Fewer settings also make the club less complex than others.
