Without a rule change to spur sales, wedge purchases dropped last year
WHEN THE USGA imposed new specs for grooves—ruling that they be shallower with more rounded edges—the association told clubmakers that they must stop manufacturing the old grooves on Dec. 31, 2010. Naturally, golfers flocked to golf shops before the new year to stock up on the stickier, spinnier square-grooved wedges. The year-over-year sales spike caused by the rule change became clear in the final month of 2011, when wedge sales dropped back to normal levels.
