DERRICK HENRY

YULEE, FLA. > FOOTBALL

Derrick, a senior running back at Yulee High, carried 48 times for 502 yards and six touchdowns to help the Hornets beat Jackson High 45--28 and set a state record for single-game rushing yards. It was his 38th consecutive 100-yard game, breaking the Florida state record and tying the national mark. His performance gave him 9,255 yards, passing Pensacola Escambia star and alltime NFL rushing leader Emmitt Smith for the No. 2 spot on Florida's career list. Derrick was last year's 4A player of the year.

JULIA ST. JOHN

DUBLIN, OHIO > SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING

Julia, a seventh-grader at St. Brigid of Kildare School, won two gold medals in the 11-to-12-year-old category at the Pan American Age Group Championships in Cali, Colombia. She had the top score in figures with 67.3022 points and joined Ava Lichter to win duet (135.0858). Earlier this year she won gold in solo, duet and figures and helped the Ohio Synchro Swim Club win team silver at the U.S. Age Group Championships in Oxford, Ohio. Julia is top-ranked in the U.S. among 11- and 12-year-olds.

NATHAN CHEN

SALT LAKE CITY > FIGURE SKATING

Nathan, a homeschooled 13-year-old who trains in Lake Arrowhead, Calif., defeated 21 competitors to win his first Junior Grand Prix event, in Linz, Austria. He held a 14-point lead after his short program and landed six triple jumps in the second half of his free skate, including a triple flip--triple toe combination for the highest-scoring mark of the competition (11.34) and a 37-point margin of victory. A two-time U.S. novice champion, Nathan won the U.S. junior men's title in January.

LOUISA BODDY

DERBYSHIRE, ENGLAND > FIELD HOCKEY

Boddy, a graduate student and defender at Connecticut, had a hat trick and anchored two shutout victories to help the undefeated Huskies earn the No. 1 NCAA ranking. She scored her three goals in a 5--0 win over Rutgers, helping to hold the Scarlet Knights to eight shots on goal, and then limited Yale to just one shot the next day. She was named the Big East defensive player of the week. Boddy, who is pursuing her master's in sports management, was named team MVP at Durham University last year.

ANDREW HARTE

DOWNERS GROVE, ILL. > FOOTBALL

Andrew, a senior at Montini Catholic, kicked his 65th consecutive extra point, during a 35--0 win over Wheaton Academy, to break the Illinois record. In the season opener against Palatine High, he recovered a fumbled extra-point snap late in the third quarter and threw for a two-point conversion. He then kicked a 27-yard field goal in overtime to seal the win, 40--37. Andrew, who has helped the Broncos to three straight 5A state titles, had extended his extra-point record to 74 straight through Sunday.

KATIE FULLER

OLIVENHAIN, CALIF. > VOLLEYBALL

Fuller, a 6'2" senior opposite hitter and a team captain at USC, matched a career-high 21 kills and had a .444 hitting percentage to lead the No. 2--ranked Women of Troy to a 3--1 victory over top-ranked, defending national champion UCLA in their Pac-12 opener. Earlier this year she led USC in sweeping three teams to win the USC Classic and was named tournament MVP. Fuller, who has helped USC to two straight NCAA semifinals, leads the team in kills (4.07) and points per set (4.51).

RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS

A few hours before his Rays were to face the Red Sox in Tampa on the evening of Sept. 19, infielder Elliot Johnson—responding to a tweeted invitation from tailgating fan Chris Bell—went out to the stadium parking lot to play catch with Bell and his two friends. "They were good dudes," Johnson said. "It was a good time. Why not?"
