Faces in the Crowd

JESSICA HEMBREE

TAHLEQUAH, OKLA. > CROSS-COUNTRY

Jessica, a senior at Tahlequah High, won Oklahoma's 5A state title for the third time, with an 11:48 finish on the two-mile course—14 seconds ahead of the runner-up. She came back from a broken left tibia suffered during last year's state meet, which caused her to collapse while in the lead just 50 meters from the finish line. Jessica, who won the state 1,600- and 3,200-meter track titles in 2011, returned to running this fall after surgery to affix a metal plate to the stress-fractured bone.

KELVIN TAYLOR

BELLE GLADE, FLA. > FOOTBALL

Kelvin, a senior running back at Glades Day School, ran for 201 yards and four TDs on 17 carries in a 55--20 win over Summit Christian School to become the unofficial alltime national rushing leader. With 11,418 career yards, including 1,584 as an eighth-grader, he surpassed the mark set by Ken Hall of Sugarland, Texas, from 1950 to '53. The National Federation of High Schools only recognizes four-year high school career records, but Kelvin's yardage—11,621 through Sunday—is considered a Florida record.

CASEY DANIELSON

OSCEOLA, WIS. > GOLF

Casey, a senior at Osceola High, shot a Day 1 state-tournament-record six-under par 66 and a two-day total of 139 to win her fourth straight individual Division 2 title by 14 strokes. She is Wisconsin's second female golfer to win a title four years in a row, matching the feat of her older sister, Lindsay (FACES, Dec. 15, 2008). In September, Casey helped the U.S. win the Junior Ryder Cup and competed for the Duke of York Young Champions Trophy at Royal Troon in Scotland. She will play at Stanford.

JOEY DANCE

CHRISTIANSBURG, VA. > WRESTLING

Joey, a senior at Christiansburg High, won the 126-pound title match at the Super 32 Challenge in Greensboro, N.C., with a 4--3 decision over defending champion Michael Kemerer (Murrysville, Pa.) that lifted him to the No. 1 national ranking in his weight class. The second four-time finalist in the history of the prestigious folkstyle event, Joey also is a three-time Virginia Class 2A champ. He won the FILA Junior Freestyle Nationals last April and competed at the FILA Junior Worlds in Thailand in September.

JESSICA LEWIS

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. > VOLLEYBALL

Jessica, a 5'9" senior middle and outside hitter at Huntsville High, led the Panthers with 18 kills and added nine digs and five aces in a 3--0 win over Vestavia Hills for Huntsville's fourth straight 6A state title. The only senior on the team, she was named tournament MVP. Jessica, who moved up to varsity as an eighth-grader and played on the Panthers' past three title teams, was named The Huntsville Times's player of the year in 2011 and '10. She had 1,289 kills this season.

SILAS TALBOT

ANCHORAGE > CROSS-COUNTRY

Talbot, a sophomore at Dartmouth, ran a 24:24.34 for third place in the centennial New England Championships, held at Stanley Park's 8K course in Westfield, Mass., to lead Big Green to a meet win. The performance reprised the school's team title at the original event, held 100 years ago in Brookline, Mass. Talbot, who is also a member of Dartmouth's men's cross-country skiing team, was Alaska's Gatorade runner of the year for both track and cross-country as a junior and senior at Robert Service High.

RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS

Bradley Morrison, a student at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio, was in a Cleveland-area sporting goods store weighing the purchase of a number 23 Joe Haden jersey, when the Browns cornerback himself walked into the store. Haden (far right, with Morrison) chatted with Morrison, then bought him the jersey and autographed it.
