JAZMINE FRAY

FREEPORT, N.Y. > TRACK AND FIELD

Jazmine, a sophomore at Kellenberg Memorial High, won the 800 meters at the Hispanic Games at the Armory in New York City by 1.33 seconds in 2:10.96, the best time in the nation this season. She was named the outstanding female track athlete of the meet. A week later Jazmine won the 1,000 meters (2:55.77) and anchored the winning 4 √ó 800 at the Armory's Molloy Stanner Games. Last June she won the freshman mile at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. (5:06.04).

ERIC HARTZELL

WHITE BEAR LAKE, MINN. > ICE HOCKEY

Hartzell, a senior goalie at Quinnipiac, had 15 saves in a 3--2 victory over Union to help the Bobcats extend their unbeaten streak to a Division I--leading 16 games (14 wins, two ties). He has started every game during the streak. At week's end Hartzell led D-I with an .841 winning percentage; his 1.48 goals-against average ranked third in the division and second in the nation among goalies with more than 1,000 minutes. He is a Hobey Baker Award nominee.

JASMINE TOSKY

PALO ALTO, CALIF. > SWIMMING

Tosky, a freshman at USC, won the 200-yard fly (1:54.38) and helped the 800-yard free relay team finish first (7:05.69), the 400-yard medley relay finish second and the 200-yard free relay finish third as the Trojan women won the winter nationals title in Austin last month. Earlier in December, Tosky competed in the FINA Short-Course World Championships in Istanbul, where she swam the lead leg of the U.S.'s gold-medal-winning 800-meter free relay.

KYLE DAKE

ITHACA, N.Y. > WRESTLING

Dake, a senior at Cornell and ranked No. 1 in the country at 165 pounds, defeated second-ranked David Taylor of Penn State 3--2 in the final of the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, becoming the second wrestler in tournament history to win four straight titles. Last year Dake became the first NCAA wrestler to win national championships in three different weight classes: He took the title at 141 pounds as a freshman, at 149 pounds as a sophomore and at 157 pounds as a junior.

CASSIDY BOENSCH

AU GRES, MICH. > BASKETBALL

Cassidy, a 6'3" freshman center and power forward at Au Gres--Sims High, had 17 defensive and 14 offensive rebounds for a personal-best 31 boards in a 47--46 victory over Mio--Au Sable High. She also scored 23 points, blocked 10 shots and had five assists in the win. Cassidy, one of two freshmen named to the state preseason top 100 players list by the Detroit Free Press, leads Michigan in total rebounds (179) and is averaging a triple double with 22.7 points, 16.3 boards and 11.6 blocks for the Wolverines.

BRANT BIDEGAIN

JAMUL, CALIF. > HANDBALL

Bidegain, a 2011 graduate of Steele Canyon High now training to be an EMT, swept the boys' 19-and-under age group at the U.S. Handball Association's junior national four-wall championships in Chicago. He won the singles title with a 21--15, 21--11 victory over Conor McElduff of Omagh, Ireland, then teamed with John Audet of Niagara Falls, Ont., to defeat Hector Facio Jr. (Kansas City, Kan.) and Alejandro Ibarra Jr. (Golden, Colo.) 13--21, 21--5, 11--0, for his second straight U-19 doubles crown.

RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS

Kenyan-born marathoner Lornah Kiplagat (right), who moved to the Netherlands in 1999 and has run for that country since 2003, is funding through her foundation a 400-meter tartan track in Iten, Kenya. It will be just the third all-weather track in the country and the centerpiece of the Lornah Kiplagat Sports Academy for underprivileged girls.
