PETER KING'S MOCK DRAFT

We say it every year, but this time we really mean it: There'll be a mad dash to trade down from the top. There's no Andrew Luck superstar to froth over, but there's good depth from 10 to 50. Here's how Round 1 will play out

1 Chiefs

Luke Joeckel

Tackle Texas A&M

[INSTANT STARTER]

Top-caliber modern-day tackle. Blocked for a pocket QB (Ryan Tannehill) in '11, and a mobile one (Johnny Manziel) in '12.

2 Jaguars

Ezekiel Ansah

Defensive end Brigham Young

[TRADE BAIT]

Jags want to move. If they stick, new coach Gus Bradley goes for a D presence who he hopes has instant pass-rush impact.

3 Raiders

Sharrif Floyd

Defensive tackle Florida

With possibly nine new starters on D, Raiders need everything. Floyd replaces a free agent they hated to lose: DT Desmond Bryant.

4 Eagles

Dion Jordan

Linebacker/end Oregon

[INSTANT STARTER]

Chip Kelly bypasses the strong tackle market and a need at CB to pick an old friend from Oregon. He'll fill those other spots later.

5 Lions

Dee Milliner

Cornerback Alabama

[INSTANT STARTER]

The worst cover team in the league over the last four years ought to have heads examined if they pick anything but a CB or OT.

6 Chargers (FROM BROWNS)

Eric Fisher

Tackle Central Michigan

[VALUE PICK]

It costs new G.M. Tom Telesco a Round 2 pick to move from 11 to 6, but their LT of the future is worth first- and second-rounders.

7 Cardinals

Lane Johnson

Tackle Oklahoma

[INSTANT STARTER]

There is only one very obvious thing in this draft: If one of the three very good tackles is there for Arizona to take, he'll be a Cardinal.

8 Bills

Chance Warmack

Guard Alabama

[INSTANT STARTER]

The Bills figure they can get their preferred QB in the second round, and they're right. Warmack will be the long-term heir to Andy Levitre.

9 Jets

Barkevious Mingo

Linebacker/end LSU

The Rex Ryan Watch is on, but he gets one last wish: a versatile, physical rusher, and the Mr. Outside to Muhammad Wilkerson's Mr. Inside.

10 Titans

Jonathan Cooper

Guard North Carolina

No question that guard-turned-coach Mike Munchak runs the show in Tennessee after the signing of FA Andy Levitre and this pick.

11 Browns (FROM CHARGERS)

Geno Smith

Quarterback West Virginia

[VALUE PICK]

Don't let the smokescreen acquisition of Jason Campbell, a backup, fool you: Browns want a QB in this draft, and they get one.

12 Dolphins

D.J. Fluker

Tackle Alabama

[STRETCH]

Out goes Jake Long; in comes a guy developed by old pal Nick Saban at a position of need. He could be the opening-day RT.

13 Buccaneers

Tavon Austin

Wide receiver West Virginia

[TRADE BAIT]

I expect the Bucs to deal for Darrelle Revis before the draft, using this pick as the centerpiece, but I'd make Austin the choice for either team.

14 Panthers

Sheldon Richardson

Defensive tackle Missouri

[VALUE PICK]

Anyone who has 14 tackles and a sack against 'Bama's offensive line, which Richardson did last October, can play for me.

15 Saints

Sylvester Williams

Defensive tackle North Carolina

I thought it'd be a pass rusher here, and it's very possible that's how the Saints go with their lone top-70 pick. But a versatile DT's smart too.

16 Rams

Kenny Vaccaro

Safety Texas

[INSTANT STARTER]

With Rodney McLeod and Darian Stewart projected as starters at safety, it's time to prioritize the position—which the Rams will do here.

17 Steelers

Jarvis Jones

Outside linebacker Georgia

[SINKER]

Great college productivity, but he's sliding. Teams think he'll struggle to pick up difficult schemes. The Steelers will take that chance.

18 Cowboys

John Cyprien

Safety Florida International

[STRETCH]

Dallas has a need at safety, and Cyprien—a climber over the past month—is the enforcer type the Cowboys' secondary has lacked.

19 Giants

Bjoern Werner

Defensive end Florida State

This just in: The Giants like to take first-round pass rushers. Productive ones. Werner qualifies: 49 tackles behind the line over the last two years.

20 Bears

Tyler Eifert

Tight end Notre Dame

[VALUE PICK]

Chicago would rather have a top tackle, but the good ones will be long gone. Instead, Eifert could be Jay Cutler's Day One security blanket.

21 Bengals

Eddie Lacy

Running back Alabama

NFL sign of the times: No RBs in the top 20 of the draft. There's a legit chance none go in the first round, but the Bengals love this guy.

22 Rams

DeAndre Hopkins

Wide receiver Clemson

The Rams want to deal out of this because they think they can get WR value in the second or third round. So this spot could move on the fly.

23 Vikings

Manti Te'o

Linebacker Notre Dame

The Vikes have had good luck with Domers—they have five on the roster—and G.M. Rick Spielman thinks the hoax story is overblown.

24 Colts

Xavier Rhodes

Cornerback Florida State

[VALUE PICK]

G.M. Ryan Grigson's hot streak continues as he gets the No. 2 CB in the draft all the way down at 24. Rhodes is big and confident.

25 Vikings

Justin Hunter

Wide receiver Tennessee

[STRETCH]

They could take Cordarrelle Patterson, who reminds some of troubled Randy Moss, but they opt for the safer, bigger (6' 4") Vols receiver.

26 Packers

Star Lotulelei

Defensive tackle Utah

[VALUE PICK]

A classic example of Packers G.M. Ted Thompson's taking the best player on the board. Patience is a virtue this year. And Star will be a star.

27 Texans

Keenan Allen

Wide receiver California

Cal's alltime-leading pass catcher is a smart play here. Allen, who's 6' 2" and physical, will be a great bookend to Andre Johnson.

28 Broncos

Datone Jones

Defensive end UCLA

Though not a classic pass rusher, the three-year college starter fits the bill of developmental outside rush man to replace Elvis Dumervil.

29 Patriots

Terrance Williams

Wide receiver Baylor

[STRETCH]

Not widely beloved, but a tall (6' 2"), physical WR with 51 games of experience and the ability to beat corners. The Pats don't have that.

30 Falcons

Desmond Trufant

Cornerback Washington

[INSTANT STARTER]

Not many four-year starters in college these days, but Trufant is one—against big-time West Coast attacks. Atlanta needs a starting corner.

31 49ers

Cordarrelle Patterson

Wide receiver Tennessee

[OFF-FIELD RISK]

A juco convert, he had only one year in D-I, and he comes with discipline concerns. This is a reach, but Jim Harbaugh's 49ers don't fear different kids.

32 Ravens

Arthur Brown

Linebacker Kansas State

[STRETCH]

"Hell of a football player and leader," said one opposing scout of the two-year K-State captain after he transferred from Miami.
