KENZO COTTON

LA VISTA, NEB. > TRACK AND FIELD

Kenzo, a junior at Papillion--La Vista High, ran the 100 meters at the Class A state meet in 10.41 to break the all-class Nebraska record (10.60). Already the 200 state record-holder (21.31), he won that event for the third straight year (21.54) and anchored the Monarchs' state-record-setting 4 √ó 100 relay (41.40). A cornerback on the football team, Kenzo had hip surgery after that season and, despite being unable to train again until February, defended his 100 title at the Kansas Relays in April (10.69).

SAMMI BURGESS

FOREST HILL, MD. > LACROSSE

Sammi, a senior attacker and co-captain at the McDonogh School (Owings Mills), scored three goals and had two assists in an 11--8 come-from-behind victory over St. Paul's School for Girls for the program's fifth straight state title and 91st consecutive win—the longest active streak in the country. The Eagles also finished as U.S. Lacrosse's No. 1--ranked program for the fourth year in a row. Sammi, who had 49 goals this season and went 78--0 during her high school career, will play at Florida.

CARLOS LOPEZ

NORTHRIDGE, CALIF. > BASEBALL

Lopez, a senior first baseman at Cal State--Fullerton, hit back-to-back walk-off home runs to help the Titans sweep UC Irvine for a fourth straight Big West conference title. With the second game of the three-game series tied 2--2 in the bottom of the ninth, he belted a three-run shot; the next day, with his team trailing 5--4, he hit another three-run blast to clinch an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. A Senior CLASS Award finalist, Lopez led Fullerton in batting at week's end (.344).

HAILEY SZPILA

SHEPHERDSVILLE, KY. > SOFTBALL

Hailey, a junior lefty and first baseman at Bullitt Central High, homered in five consecutive at bats during a three-day stretch to set a Kentucky record. The previous mark was three. She hit a solo shot in a 7--6 win over Elizabethtown High, then launched three more (including two grand slams) in a 15--1 win over Spencer County High, tying the state record for homers in a game. She hit her fifth round-tripper in a 2--1 defeat of South Oldham High. Through Sunday, Hailey was batting .467.

JOHANNES HOCK

COLOGNE, GERMANY > TRACK AND FIELD

Hock, a freshman at Texas, won the decathlon at the Big 12 conference championship with a meet-record 8,293 points, the top NCAA mark of the season, No. 4 in the world this year and seventh best in NCAA history. He won six of the ten events: the 100 (10.78) and 400 meters (49.80), the discus (176'8"), shot put (50' 6¼"), pole vault (15' 4½") and long jump (24' 5¾"). He finished in the top three in all but one of the other events to help the Longhorns win their fifth outdoor conference title.

ASHLEY FREIBERG

BONDVILLE, VT. > AUTO RACING

Freiberg, 21, a 2010 graduate of Lockport Township (Ill.) High, finished second in the third race of the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama, held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif., to move into a first-place tie in the points standings, ahead of 32 male drivers. Driving a Porsche 911 for EFFORT Racing, she earned her first podium and fourth top five finish this season. In 2010 Freiberg became the first woman to win a Skip Barber Racing Series overall championship and national level race.
