KY WESTBROOK
CHANDLER, ARIZ. > TRACK AND FIELD
Ky, a junior at Chandler High, won the Dream 100 race at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York City by .03 of a second in 11.52, against a .4 mph headwind. At the Division I state championships two weeks earlier she ran the 200 meters in 23.39 to break the Arizona record (23.60); she also won the 100 (11.45) and the shot put (45' 2 ¼") to help the Wolves earn their eighth straight title. At the Chandler City Meet in April, Ky broke a 33-year-old state mark in the shot with a heave of 47' 9".
STEVEN STUMPH
MORAGA, CALIF. > SWIMMING
Steven, a senior at Campolindo High, won the 100-yard breaststroke at the CIF--North Coast Sectional championships in 53.39, the fastest time ever by a U.S. high school swimmer. At prelims a day earlier he tied Olympian Brendan Hansen's national public high school record (53.67). Steven also set a meet mark in the 100 butterfly (47.88) and helped set meet records in the 200 medley relay (1:30.52) and the 400 free relay (3:01.70) to lead the Cougars to a ninth straight title. He will swim at USC.
CARLEY HOOVER
CLEMSON, S.C. > SOFTBALL
Carley, a senior righthander at D.W. Daniel High, pitched a no-hitter in the Class 3A state championship, her second no-hitter of the playoffs, for a 4--0 win over Darlington High and the Lions' first title. This season she went 24--4, averaging 2.5 strikeouts per inning with a 0.15 ERA, while batting .500 with a .767 on-base percentage. She also set a national high school career record for walks taken (157). South Carolina's Gatorade player of the year as a junior, Carley has signed to play at Stanford.
BEN SAAREL
SALT LAKE CITY > TRACK AND FIELD
Ben, a senior at Park City High, won the Dream Mile at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York City, defeating the runner-up by 2.32 seconds in 4:02.72 for the top time in Utah history. At the Class 3A state meet a week before he set state marks in the 800 (1:51.13) and 1,600 (4:07.95), and in April he won the 3,200 at the Arcadia Invitational in a state-record 8:45.74. He was unbeaten at all three distances in Utah meets this season. Ben will attend Colorado.
KARA CANNIZZARO
CAZENOVIA, N.Y. > LACROSSE
Cannizzaro, a senior midfielder and co-captain at North Carolina, scored four goals and had two assists to help the Tar Heels defeat previously unbeaten Maryland 13--12 in triple overtime at the NCAA Division I championship. UNC's alltime single-season scoring leader with 83 points this year, she helped the team win its first national title and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Last year Cannizzaro was among the final cuts for the senior national team.
BRADLEY SHIGEZAWA
HONOLULU > GOLF
Shigezawa, a junior at Claremont McKenna College shot a four-round two-under 283 at the Raven Golf Club in Destin, Fla., while competing for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, to win the NCAA Division III title by four strokes. Top-ranked in D-III by Golfstat, he won five tournaments this spring, including the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title. Shigezawa had a team-best 72.53-stroke average and was named an All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
