Swap Meet

On Sunday the Clippers agreed to send a 2015 first-round pick to the Celtics for coach Doc Rivers (right)—who as a player ended up in Atlanta because the Hawks got a second-round pick in 1983 from the Bulls for coach Kevin Loughery. Here are a few other high-profile coach trades.

1977

Pirates send C Manny Sanguillen and $100,000 to A's for Chuck Tanner.

• Result

Pittsburgh got Sanguillen back a year later on the cheap, and Tanner led the team to the '79 title.

2000

Patriots send 1st-round pick to Jets for Bill Belichick.

• Result

The deal, three years after New York gave New England four picks for Bill Parcells, landed the Jets Shaun Ellis and the Pats a coach who has won three rings.

2002

Bucs send four picks and cash to Raiders for Jon Gruden.

• Result

Gruden won a Super Bowl his first year but never won another playoff game. The Raiders got several adequate players—but no Pro Bowlers.

2011

Marlins send P Jhan Marinez and IF Osvaldo Martinez to White Sox for Ozzie Guillen.

• Result

Lose/lose. Marinez is in Triple A, Martinez was sold to the Dodgers and Guillen's reign in Miami lasted a year.

2013

Red Sox send IF Mike Aviles to Blue Jays for John Farrell.

• Result

Aviles was flipped to Cleveland for effective reliever Esmil Rogers. Farrell, at week's end, had Boston surprisingly in first place.
