DAVID BERG
COVINA, CALIF. > BASEBALL
Berg, a walk-on sophomore reliever at UCLA, pitched the final inning of the second game of the College World Series against Mississippi State for an NCAA-record-tying 51st appearance, tagging first for the final out in an 8--0 win that clinched the Bruins' first CWS title. A day earlier the sidearming righthander closed out a 3--1 victory, setting the NCAA single-season mark with his 24th save. Berg, the Pac-12 pitcher of the year, was 7--0 with a 0.92 ERA, second best in the nation.
MEIKA ASHBY
KALAMAZOO, MICH. > TENNIS
Meika, a recent graduate of Hackett Catholic Central High and the team captain, defeated Colleen O'Brien of Father Gabriel Richard High (Ann Arbor) 6--2, 6--1 for her third Division 4 singles title. This season she set the Michigan high school record for most career 6--0, 6--0 matches with 57. She finished her high school career with a 94--2 record and was named All-State and voted team MVP all four seasons. Meika will be playing for Western Michigan next fall.
JALEN RAMSEY
SMYRNA, TENN. > TRACK AND FIELD
Jalen, a recent Brentwood Academy graduate, set a state record in defending his long jump title, helping the Eagles win a third straight Division II championship. He broke the previous mark by 7 ¾" with a leap of 25' 3¼ "; he also repeated as state champion in the 400 meters (49.27) and was third in the 200 (21.85) to help Brentwood sweep the event and seal the team title. An All-State cornerback, he played in the U.S. Army All American Bowl. Jalen will play football and run track at Florida State.
EMMA BARANSKI
HAMDEN, CONN. > SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMING
Emma, a recent Hamden High graduate who also studied dance at New Haven's Educational Center for the Arts, won the junior solo championship at nationals in Greensboro, N.C., in April, to become the first East Coast swimmer to take the title since 1955. She also won gold in figures. Emma, who competes for the New Canaan YMCA Aquianas, earned the Senior East Zone meet High Point trophy for the third straight time and was named the East's swimmer of the year. She will compete at Ohio State.
ZED WILLIAMS
SILVER CREEK, N.Y. > LACROSSE
Zed, a midfielder and recent graduate of Silver Creek High, scored 95 goals and had 77 assists this season to break the national career records for goals and points. He first played varsity as an eighth-grader, and in his five-year career had 444 goals to shatter the previous mark of 353. He also had 285 assists, finishing with 729 points to surpass the record of 589. He was selected to play in the Under Armour All-America Classic this week. A member of the Seneca Nation, Zed will attend Virginia.
LINDSAY VOLLMER
HAMILTON, MO. > TRACK AND FIELD
Vollmer, a sophomore heptathlete at Kansas, became the first Jayhawks woman to earn a title at the Division I championships, helping the school win its first women's national outdoor championship. She had career bests in the final three events of the seven-event competition, finishing first in the javelin (151'6"), third in the long jump (20' 2 ½") and 13th in the 800 meters (2:19.36) for 6,086 total points, the best U.S. score this season. Vollmer was named an All-America.
