SIMONE MANUEL

SUGAR LAND, TEXAS > SWIMMING

Simone, a rising senior at Austin High, swam the 50-meter freestyle in 25.01 for second place at nationals in Indianapolis, setting a record for 15-to-16-year-olds and qualifying for the world championships in Barcelona. She broke 2012 Olympian Missy Franklin's mark by .25 of a second. A member of First Colony Swim Team, Simone also placed third in the 100 free at nationals (47.73) to break another age-group record and earn a spot on the U.S.'s 4 √ó 100 relay team at worlds.

TRAYVON BROMELL

ST. PETERSBURG > TRACK AND FIELD

Trayvon, a recent Gibbs High grad, became the first U.S. high school sprinter to break 10 seconds in the 100 meters with a wind-aided 9.99 finish last month at the Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque. In May, Trayvon won the 100 at the Golden South Classic in 10.27, the best non-wind-aided high school time in 2013. At the 3A state meet, he won the 100 title (10.45) and anchored the winning 4 √ó 100 relay. The Gatorade national boys' track and field athlete of the year, he will attend Baylor.

PAM SMITH

SALEM, ORE. > ULTRAMARATHON

Smith, 38, a pathologist and mother of two, was the top female finisher (18:37:21) in the Western States Endurance Run, a 100.2-mile race from Squaw Valley to Auburn in California. It was her fourth time completing the world's oldest 100-mile trail run, which climbs 18,090 feet and descends 22,970. Smith, who finished 48th among women and 272nd overall last year, was ninth overall in a field of 383 in the second-hottest race in the event's 40-year history, with temperatures reaching 102°.

CHASE HANNA

LEAWOOD, KANS. > GOLF

Chase, a recent graduate of Shawnee Mission East High, won both the Kansas and the Missouri junior amateur championships. He shot a six-under 210 to win the Kansas Junior at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Winfield by the largest margin of victory (eight strokes) in the tournament's 54-year history. He shot a seven-under 137 to win the Missouri event, at Paradise Pointe Golf Complex in Smithville, by four strokes. Chase will play for Kansas this fall.

JANE CLINE

CHARLOTTE > SOCCER

Jane, a striker and recent graduate of Charlotte Catholic High, scored 75 goals, the third-most in North Carolina history, to lead the nation this season. She also had 17 assists. Jane was named MVP of the state-title-winning squad as a sophomore and last season led the Cougars to the Class 3A championship game. The Mecklenburg County and Charlotte Observer player of the year, she is a three-time all-state selection. Jane will attend Appalachian State.

NATE SMITH

MCCORDSVILLE, IND. > WATERSKIING

Smith, 22, won his second straight Malibu Open men's slalom title, on Veterans Park Lagoon in Milwaukee, tying the world record by clearing two buoys with 43 feet off the rope. (It was shortened to 32 feet from 75.) He defeated the U.K.'s Will Asher, the world's top-ranked slalom skier, in the final. Smith ran the complete pass (six buoys) at 41 feet off the rope in three of the four previous rounds. He also tied the record in June at the Little Mountain Spring Pro Am 2 in Maiden, N.C.
