THON MAKER

Thon, a 7-foot rising sophomore at the Carlisle School, had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Boo Williams (Hampton, Va.) at the AAU Nike Peach Jam AAU in North Augusta, S.C., going against the No. 1 player in the class of 2014, Jahlil Okafor of Mac Irvin Fire (Chicago). Born in South Sudan, Thon moved to Australia at five and came to the U.S. two years ago. In June he was named a top five player at the Pangos All-American Camp. Thon averaged 23.4 points, 12.9 rebounds and 4.9 blocks for Carlisle last year.
EMILY SAVAGE
WESTON, CONN. > TRACK AND FIELD
Emily, a recent Weston High grad, won the pole vault (11'11¾") at club nationals in New York City, competing for the Hudson Valley Flying Circus. In June she was the only vaulter to clear 12'10¾" at nationals in Greensboro, N.C., and she reached 13'2½" at the New England Championships in New Britain, Conn. That broke the Connecticut record she had set in April at the 119th Penn Relays (a meet mark 13'1½"). Emily, who also holds the state record for indoor pole vault (12'7"), will attend Oklahoma.
BRENDAN O'REILLY
HINSDALE, ILL. > GOLF
Brendan, a freshman-to-be at Hinsdale Central High, won the 44th Illinois State Junior Amateur Championship, shooting a one-over 214 (including a career-best 66 in the second round) at Makray Memorial Golf Club in Barrington, to tie Nick Hardy, a rising senior at Glenbrook North High. Brendan, 14, defeated Hardy in a two-hole playoff by sinking a 20-foot putt for par on the second hole. Three weeks later he tied for 10th place at the Callaway Junior Worlds at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
STEPHANIE PEACOCK
CAPE CORAL, FLA. > SWIMMING
Peacock, a senior at North Carolina this fall, won the 1,500-meter freestyle at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia, with a time of 16:04.44 to beat Tar Heels teammate Ashley Steenvoorden by 3.45 seconds and to break the World University Games record by 1.46 seconds. She also won silver in the 800 free (8:28.21). At the Ohio State Invitational last December, Peacock set NCAA records in the 1,000-yard free (9:28.92) and the 1,650 free (15:37.06).
BEN HANSEN
MILLADORE, WIS. > TIMBER SPORTS
Hansen, a rising senior at Wisconsin--Stevens Point, won the Stihl Timbersports Collegiate Championships in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., with 19 points in four events, including first place in single buck (slicing a log with a crosscut saw: 21.05 seconds) and second in standing block chop (chopping an upright log with an ax: 33.64). He was third in the underhand chop (standing on a log while chopping it in half with an ax: 36.01) and stock saw (slicing a log twice with a chain saw: 15.22).
JESSIE SINDLINGER
CHARLES CITY, IOWA. > GOLF
Jessie, a recent Charles City High graduate, shot a seven-under 65 to win the Class 4A state title, becoming the first four-time Iowa girls' champion since 1961 as she led the Comets to their second title in three years. Earlier this month she qualified for the 38th PGA Junior Championship, winning the Iowa section title at Ames Golf and Country Club by eight strokes with a two-round 147. Named the Senior Girls Golf Athlete of the Year by the National High School Coaches Association, Jessie will attend Iowa.
