Aaron Pico | Whittier, Calif. | Wrestling
Aaron, a sophomore at St. John Bosco High, won the 138-pound freestyle title at the cadet world championships in Zrenjanin, Serbia. He beat Japan's Yuhi Fujinami 8--6 for the U.S.'s only gold medal. As a freshman he won the state title and earned his second straight triple crown, taking his weight class in the freestyle, folkstyle and Greco-Roman nationals.
Megan Glasmann | Park City, Utah | Track and Field
Megan, a recent Park City High grad, won gold in javelin at the Pan American Junior Championships in Medellín, Colombia, with a meet-record 176'11". It was the second-longest high school throw of all time. A three-time Class 3A state title winner, she also won at junior nationals in Des Moines in June (166'7"). Megan will attend Stanford this fall.
Jace Daniels | Kenai, Alaska | Football
Jace, a senior running back at Kenai Central High, had 20 carries for a state-record 488 yards and seven touchdowns in a 51--16 season-opening win over Nikiski High, scoring five times in the third quarter to erase a 16--15 deficit. A week later he had a two-yard TD run in the Kardinals' first defeat of Wasilla High in 18 years (17--14).
Gabriella Then | Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. | Golf
Gabriella, an Upland High graduate, defeated Lakareber Abe 2 and 1 to win the U.S. Junior Championship at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind. She clinched the victory with a birdie on the 35th of 36 holes. Gabriella also won the Scott Robertson Memorial in May. Ranked No. 8 by the American Junior Golf Association, she is a USC freshman.
Garrett Smith | Rexburg, Idaho | Rodeo
Garrett, a recent homeschooled graduate, scored 1,690 points in six events at the National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, Wyo., becoming the first three-time All-Around Cowboy in the event's 65 years. He was second in cutting, sixth in steer wrestling and fourth in saddle bronc riding. He is a freshman at Oklahoma Panhandle State.
Tamara Gorman and Tony Smoragiewicz
Rapid City, S.D. | Triathlon
Tamara, a senior at Stevens High, and Smoragiewicz, a Michigan sophomore, won the girls' and boys' elite titles at junior nationals in West Chester, Ohio. Tamara finished in 1:02:31.02 and Smoragiewicz in 57:15.49.
