I Think I'm Gonna Hurdle Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford took a leap of faith and was rewarded with a one-yard touchdown in a 31--30 win over the Cowboys in Detroit on Sunday. Trailing by six with 1:02 to play, Stafford took over on his own 20 with no timeouts. Five plays later he found Calvin Johnson for 22 yards, down to the Dallas six-inch line, then signaled that he was going to spike the ball to stop the clock. Instead, Stafford took it over the top. Asked what he was thinking, the QB said, "Hard to explain. You just go to the line and you feel it sometimes."

Chin Music Don't mind Jason Motte, Boston fans: He was just yanking your chain—er, his chin—last Saturday. The Cardinals' closer, who isn't pitching in the World Series (he had Tommy John surgery in May), refused to blend into the crowd, mocking the Red Sox' dugout celebration with a pre--Game 3 beard tug. St. Louis wound up winning by a whisker, 5--4, on a controversial obstruction call at third base (page 32).

Daly Doubles John Daly found himself playing before a similarly fashion-forward gallery at the BMW Masters in Shanghai, his first tournament since July surgery to repair a torn right elbow tendon. "I've always been a quick healer," Daly said after a four-under 68 in the opening round last Thursday put him in second place. "[My doctor] figured four months [recovery]. I usually don't listen to anybody." Perhaps he should have. Two days later Daly had a pair of triple bogeys and shot 44 on the back nine. He finished 48th.
