Splitting The Defense Junior guard Nick Johnson (13) jumped out on Weber State senior swingman Davion Berry during top-seeded Arizona's 68--59 win last Friday in San Diego during the NCAA tournament's opening weekend (page 12). Berry scored 24 in a battle of the Wildcats, but his team, which connected on 39.2% of its threes during the year, shot only 30.2% from the floor against Arizona's acrobatic D. Johnson scored 18 points to lead his Cats, who advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 84--61 victory over Gonzaga.

Hands Off Winthrop junior swingman Taylor Calvert (20) stayed out of harm's way as senior guard Dequesha McClanahan (22) battled Duke's freshman forward Oderah Chidom (22)—and the long arm of junior Ka'lia Johnson—during a first-round matchup in Durham, N.C., on March 22. McClanahan, the three-time Big South player of the year, poured in 22 points but couldn't keep the game within reach, as the Blue Devils won 87--45. A No. 15 seed has never beaten a No. 2 in the women's tournament.

Bear Up Baylor sophomore forward Rico Gathers had a unique perspective on a shot by Nebraska junior forward Leslee Smith (21) during a second-round NCAA tournament game in San Antonio. This ball dropped through the hoop, but not many others did for the Huskers, who lost 74--60. After starting the season 2--8 in the Big 12, the Bears went on to upset Creighton in the third round and advance to the regionals for the sixth time in school history.
