Angels in The Infield

It was the last pitch of the last game of her college softball career, and D-II's Florida Southern senior pitcher Chelsea Oglevie had two outs, two runners on and a 2--1 lead over visiting Eckerd College with sophomore shortstop Kara Oberer at bat. Oberer, who temporarily left the game in the first inning after unknowingly tearing her right PCL, smashed Oglevie's rise-ball for a game-winning home run, but as she touched first, her injured knee seized up. In an act of sportsmanship that echoed a softball play that made headlines in 2008 (The Way It Should Be, SI, June 29, 2009), Oglevie and second baseman Leah Pemberton scooped up Oberer and carried her around the bases to reach home plate. "It was a respect thing," says Oglevie. "I felt that she deserved it, and even though it was the end of my career, it was the right thing to do.
