The Middle Man

How are the Heat navigating the Pacers' stifling defense? One answer: Dwyane Wade. Despite missing 28 games during the regular season because of injuries to his left hamstring and his knees, Wade has taken the postseason by storm, sparking Miami's offense in the Eastern Conference finals, averaging 24.3 points per game on 62% shooting through Sunday. He's outmaneuvering Indiana's 7'2" center Roy Hibbert by hitting tough, intermediate shots, including his signature floater. Writes SI.com's Rob Mahoney, "Wade is consistently working his way into the lane to engage the help defense." When Pelé, at age 34, played his first game for the New York Cosmos, in front of 21,000 fans at Downing Stadium, the pitch became his stage and U.S. soccer finally had its star. Pelé lived up to his billing, scoring once and adding an assist in a performance that enabled the Cosmos to salvage a 2--2 tie with the Dallas Tornado.
