Elite Dreams

Two weeks ago FACES IN THE CROWD alum, Alexa Efraimson (SI, Oct. 28, 2013) passed on the chance to run alongside a pack of pros at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., in favor of the Class 4A Washington state meet, where the Camas High junior blazed into the record books with the fastest U.S. high school 1,600 meters of all time (4:33.29). From there, Alexa went to the Adidas Grand Prix in New York City last weekend, where she took on the professionals in the open 1,500 meters. "I was a little nervous, but I wanted to give it all I had," she said. World indoor and outdoor champ Abeba Aregawi of Sweden won, but Alexa, who's considering turning pro next year, finished 10th and smashed her personal best by 8.95 seconds with a 4:07.05, second fastest in national high school history. "I love going against the top competition," she said. "It brings out the best."
