Faces in the Crowd

Midge Purce | Olney, Md. | Soccer

Purce, a rising sophomore forward at Harvard, scored on a header for the U.S. under-20 team in the 21st minute of a 2--1 win over the French in Plougastel, France, for her sixth U-20 goal in 12 matches. She scored 11 times to tie for the Ivy League lead last fall and was the first freshman to earn the league's player of the year and rookie of the year honors.

Jonah Gorevic | Rye, N.Y. | Track and Field

Jonah, 10 and a fifth-grader at F.E. Bellows Elementary in Mamaroneck, set a world record in the mile for ages 10 and under with a 5:01.55 in the youth boys' race at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York City. The previous mark was 5:05.3. A member of Tailwind Track Club, he is a two-time national AAU cross-country champ.

Robin Anderson | Matawan, N.J. | Tennis

Anderson, a UCLA junior, won her singles and doubles matches and was named tournament MVP in leading the Bruins to a 4--3 victory over North Carolina for the Division I title. The Pac-12 singles player of the year, she finished the season ranked second in the nation and received the national Honda Sports Award for women's tennis.

Derick Narine | Queens, N.Y. | Cricket

Derick, a junior all-rounder at John Adams High, scored 49 runs to lead the Spartans to a 156--119 win over Hillcrest for the Public School Athletic League title. In the regular season he set PSAL records for runs (858) and centuries (four), and had the top batting average (78) and single-game run total (141). A native of Guyana, Derick is a former member of his home country's U-19 team.

Megan Mascarenas | Colorado Springs | Bouldering

Megan, a junior at Doherty High, had the top U.S. women's finish with fourth place at the Vail event on the IFSC World Cup tour. In her first World Cup final, she scaled the course twice in eight tries and earned three bonus points in nine attempts, finishing behind climbers five to 10 years older. Megan was third at open nationals in February.

Carlos and Khalil Davis

Blue Springs, Mo. | Track and Field, Football

Junior twins at Blue Springs High, Carlos set a state mark with a 212' 5" in the discus, the best high school throw this year, and Khalil was second at 197 feet, lifting the Wildcats to the Class 4 title. They were also D-linemen for the Class 6 champs.
