FOR JULY 28, 2014
While there may have been whispers that several colleges, including Kentucky, overlooked hiring Charlie Strong as a football coach because he is African-American and because his wife is white, it should be noted that at the same time Strong was hired to coach Louisville, Kentucky hired Joker Phillips as its head coach. Phillips, too, is African-American, and his wife, Leslie, is white.
Steve Goodrum, Versailles, Ky.
Is that fellow in the deep grass to the left of Rory and behind the Rolex clock doing what I think he's doing? He's inside the rope, so perhaps he's another golfer searching for a lost ball. Not seeing any privies nearby, though, I'm speculating that he's taking a bathroom break.
Norman P. Snyder, San Jose
In his otherwise informative piece about the issues surrounding the Qatar World Cup, Grant Wahl failed to mention that Qatar is a financial supporter of Hamas and the Islamic State (ISIS). Maybe a country that funds militant groups shouldn't host the world's premier sporting event.
Jonathan Fiskus, Bronx, N.Y.
EDITOR'S NOTE
The story about Drew Brees in the July 28 issue of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED should have noted that Brees is an investor in TRX, the training equipment company that is mentioned in the story. We apologize for the omission.
COVER
Superb writing by Michael Bamberger in his cover story on Rory McIlroy. Like a cool breeze rolling in from the Irish Sea, Rory is a much-needed breath of fresh air for golf.

SCORECARD
I can't believe Jack Dickey did not mention in his Time to Go Rogue essay one of the biggest villains in baseball today, David Ortiz. His arrogance and his gestures at the plate to show up pitchers are some of the reasons why both he and the Red Sox are so disliked.
Richard Fiedler
Sun City Center, Fla.
Dickey sorely missed the mark in suggesting that baseball is hurting because it lacks villains. The game is not a reality show. Can't we just enjoy the relative peace and the entertainment brought by the game's positive and humble personalities?
