WHOOPS, THERE IT IS

A quick roundup of regrettable moments

An SI story in 1986 addressed the Bears' nosetackle as Richard (the Refrigerator) Perry.... Our 2007 ranking of the NFL's 500 best players included only 497.... A college football piece in 1990 called former University of Chicago president Robert Maynard Hutchins "fat." He was actually tall and lanky. (Fact-checker: "Hey, Google didn't exist yet!") ... Swimsuit model Marisa Miller's name was misspelled 15 times in one 2004 issue.... While we're at it, Mets shortstop Rey Ordó√±ez was very understanding when we called him Ray on a 1999 cover.... Larry Csonka extended his middle finger on our cover in '72.... This forgettable 2002 projection, on SI.com: "It is conceivable that Danny Wuerffel could throw for 3,600 yards and 26 TDs." ... In 1979 we called Slap Shot the fourth-worst sports movies ever—24 years before we ranked it No. 5 all time.... SI once miscounted the number of hockey great Bobby Hull's children. This was pointed out by Mrs. Hull herself, on our letters page.
