WHEN THE RYDER CUP began in 1927, it was America versus Great Britain. The U.S. dominated, compiling a 16--3 record that forced the British to expand, first to include the Republic of Ireland, in '73, and then, in '79, all of Europe.
Since looping in the rest of the Continent, Europe leads 10--7. The maps chart Ryder Cup appearances by birthplace and show how much the Euros have relied on players outside Great Britain. They also show how the U.S. team has widened its base, bringing in more players from the Midwest and the Pacific Northwest as the game, the quality of players and the awareness of those players expanded.
