FOR SEPT. 29, 2014

I find it amazing that even in an issue with stories about Derek Jeter's farewell and the Heat's starting over without LeBron, Pookey Wigington's(white) tale of perseverance and hard work (SCORECARD) stood out above the rest. He is proof that there is life beyond sports, regardless of your limitations.

Bill Miller, Leeds, Mass.

I have some of the same feelings that Tim Layden expressed about the NFL (State of the Game). At what point did it become necessary for players to knock one another unconscious? I thought the goal was not to maim or cause injury but simply to stop the ballcarrier.

Kim Whittington, Gurnee, Ill.

Reading your story on Jeter and watching him play his final game with grace at Fenway was wonderful for this longtime Red Sox fan. Still, I shudder to think about what happens when the circus comes back to town next season with Big Top A-Rod.

Brian Kennedy, Fitzwilliam, N.H.

My friends and I used to joke about Erik Spoelstra(Heat and Light) being nothing more than Pat Riley's puppet. However, we all quickly abandoned that way of thinking after the Heat started winning under his tutelage. Despite Miami's success, I still feel as if he doesn't get the respect he deserves.

Jeff Richards, New York City

COVER

I think Jeter may have outdone himself with that walk-off hit in his last at bat at Yankee Stadium the day after his SI cover hit newsstands. Nice way to shatter the cover jinx.

Given the recent climate surrounding the NFL and its behavioral problems with its players, how can the question of drafting a troubled Jameis Winston even be on the table right now?

SCORECARD

While your blurb on MLB hazing attempted to show how it could be a positive attribute of sports and team-building, we must all remember that it often humiliates and degrades individuals rather than instilling feelings of camaraderie.
