Faces in the Crowd

Malik Newman | Jackson, Miss. | Basketball

Malik, a 6'4" senior shooting guard at Callaway High, scored 27 points for the three-time defending 5A champion in a 54--48 win over Georgia's reigning 5A champ, Miller Grove High, at the Lighthouse Classic in Corinth, Miss. The No. 3 recruit in the nation, Malik led the U.S. 17-and-under team to gold at the worlds in August and was named tournament MVP.

Kelly Barnhill | Marietta, Ga. | Softball

Kelly, a senior righthander at Pope High, threw her seventh no-hitter of the season, striking out 16 for a 4--0 victory over Hillgrove High in the Class 6A championship game. She became the first pitcher in Georgia history to surpass 500 K's in a season, whiffing 534 over 226 innings. Kelly, who will play at Florida, had a 29--5 record and an 0.59 ERA.

Taylor Fritz | Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. | Tennis

Taylor, a homeschooled junior, defeated Yunseong Chung of South Korea 7--6 (2), 6--3 at the 21st annual Osaka Mayor's Cup-World Super Junior Tennis Championships in Japan for his first international junior title. In July, Taylor reached the semifinals of the Wimbledon junior championships. He is ranked fifth in the U.S. among boys 18 and under.

Pearl Escobar | Calexico, Calif. | Volleyball

Pearl, a 5'8" junior hitter, had 34 kills in a 3--2 victory over Central Union High that clinched the San Diego Section Division IV championship. The program hadn't won a playoff game in its 42-year history before the tournament began. Pearl finished the season with an Imperial Valley League--leading 417 kills, .432 hitting percentage and 70 aces.

Andrew Buckley | Calgary, Alberta | Football

Buckley, a senior quarterback at the University of Calgary, became the first player to win the Hec Crighton Trophy—Canada's Heisman equivalent—and the Russ Jackson Award, for academics and citizenship, in the same year. His 10.6 yards per carry topped all QBs, and the Dinos led the nation in points (419), TDs (51) and total offense (5,082 yards).

Jenna Grasmeyer | Jenison, Mich. | Volleyball

Grasmeyer, a 6'1" senior outside hitter at Division III Hope College in Holland, Mich., had a match-high 22 kills in a five-set win over Emory for the program's first national title. She was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. A three-time All-America, Grasmeyer finished as the school's alltime leader in kills (1,839) and points (2,280).
