FACES IN THE CROWD

Matthew Maton | Bend, Ore. | Track and Field

Matthew, a senior at Summit High who competes unattached, broke the state mile mark, set in 2004 by eventual Olympian Galen Rupp, with a 3:59.38 third-place finish against college runners at the Oregon Twilight meet. It is the third-fastest high school mile ever and only the sixth time a high school boy has broken four minutes. Matthew will run at Oregon.

Mariel Galdiano | Pearl City, Hawaii | Golf

Mariel, a junior at Punahou School, shot a four-under 140 on the Kings' Course at the Waikoloa Beach Resort to win her third consecutive state crown and lift the Lady Buffanblu to the title. Last week she qualified for her third U.S. Women's Open; in 2011 she became the third youngest to qualify for the event. Mariel has committed to UCLA.

Tommy Acuna | West Covina, Calif. | Baseball

Tommy, a junior third baseman and designated hitter at San Dimas High, belted a three-run homer—his first of the season—in the fifth inning of a 3--2, come-from-behind win over Wilson High of Hacienda Heights to preserve the Saints' perfect record (28--0). Tommy is batting .526 for San Dimas, which is ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today.

Lauren Chamberlain | Trabuco Canyon, Calif. | Softball

Chamberlain, a senior first baseman at Oklahoma, hit a grand slam in a 6--1 win over North Texas, to become the NCAA all-time home run leader with 91 (now at 92). The previous record stood for 13 years. Chamberlain is hitting .403 with 20 homers in 53 games this season and is on pace to set an NCAA career slugging percentage, with a .955 through Sunday.

Austin Becker | Broadalbin, N.Y. | Track and Field

Becker, a junior at Buffalo State, won the 800 meters at Allegheny's Gator Invitational in a school-record time of 1:49.74, for the fastest time in D-III this year. He is only the second to break 1:50 in the division this season. In one week Becker shaved off more than a second from his 1:50.98 win at the SUNY Athletic Conference championships.

Bethany Coons | Union, Mo. | Soccer

Bethany, a senior striker at Union High, had four goals and an assist in a 10--0 rout of De Soto High to break the state career points record with 440 (now 446). The previous mark, set in 2001, was 437. Her 183 goals rank second all time in Missouri. A three-time selection for both conference player of the year and all-state, Bethany will play at Mizzou.
