FACES IN THE CROWD
Carlos Villarreal | Rio Rico, Ariz. | Track and Field
Carlos, a senior at Rio Rico High, won the high school mile in 4:05.25 at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., coming from behind in the final 150 meters to take first by .53 of a second. In May he set an Arizona record in the 1,600 meters with a 4:03.97, the third-best time in the nation this season. Carlos will compete for Arizona.
Stephanie Lin | Burr Ridge, Ill. | Badminton
Stephanie, a senior at Lyons Township High, became the first player in Illinois history to win three consecutive state titles, defeating Judy Yang of Hinsdale South High (Darien) 16--21, 21--18, 21--13. Stephanie, who finished her career with a 158--34 record, will attend Cornell, where she plans to play club badminton.
Bryson DeChambeau | Clovis, Calif. | Golf
DeChambeau, a junior at SMU, shot an eight-under 280 to win the Division I title by one stroke at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla. The Mustangs' first national champion in 10 years, he hit the ball into the water on the 13th hole of the first round but waded into the hazard to save par, taking off his socks, shoes and shirt to keep his clothes dry.
Nicole Montgomery | Colorado Springs | Track and Field
Nicole, a senior at Lewis-Palmer High in Monument, Colo., won all four events for which she qualified at the 4A state meet, setting two class records. She took the 100 meters (12.16) and the 200 (24.14), broke the 4A mark in the 400 (52.95) and anchored the 800-meter sprint medley relay to a record 1:45.06 with a leg of 52.13. Nicole will run at Kansas.
Warren Wood | Del Mar, Calif. | Tennis
Wood, a senior at Claremont McKenna College, won both of his No. 1 singles and doubles matches to captain Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to the Division III title with a 5--0 victory over Middlebury. Three days later he took the singles championship and paired with teammate Joe Dorn to win the doubles title for a college tennis triple crown.
Chanel Erasmus | Cape Town, South Africa | Rowing, Squash
Erasmus, a recent graduate of Trinity College, helped her boat edge Bates by 3.210 seconds in 6:54.576 to win a Division III varsity eight rowing title a year after she won an all-divisions championship with the squash team. Recruited for squash, she was discovered by coach Wesley Ng her freshman spring when he saw her erg times in a fitness class.
