FACES IN THE CROWD

Jared Harper | Mableton, Ga. | Basketball

Jared, a 5'11" senior point guard at Pebblebrook High, had 34 points, eight assists and four rebounds to lead the Georgia Stars to a 104--77 win over the St. Louis Eagles in the Nike EYBL Peach Jam final in North Augusta, S.C. He averaged 23.3 points over three games in the tournament and was named co-MVP. Jared has committed to Auburn.

Megan Khang | Rockland, Mass. | Golf

Megan, a recent Rockland High graduate, made her record-tying seventh appearance at the U.S. girls' junior tournament, at Tulsa Country Club; she won the stroke-play title by firing an eight-under 132 and reached the round of 32 in match play. Two weeks earlier she was the low amateur at the U.S. Women's Open, carding a five-over 285.

Ricky Thomas | San Diego | Baseball

Thomas, a sophomore lefthander at Fresno State, struck out nine and allowed just one earned run on three hits in seven innings to lead the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox to a 4--1 win over the Harwich Mariners in the Cape Cod Baseball League. He is 6--0 with an 0.95 ERA this summer. As a freshman for the Bulldogs, Thomas went 4--3 with a 3.92 ERA.

Aerial Powers | Detroit | Basketball

Powers, a 6-foot junior forward at Michigan State, had 27 points and nine boards to lead the U.S. to an 82--63 win over Canada for the World University Games title in Gwangju, South Korea. She averaged a team-high 18.0 points for the tournament. Powers had 24 double doubles at MSU last season and was an All--Big Ten pick for the second straight year.

Homer Brown | Birmingham | Table Tennis

Brown, 66, played in a record 47th consecutive U.S. Open last month. The owner of the nation's first table tennis store, he reached the men's 65-and-over doubles final in Las Vegas with Richard McAfee, losing to Dell Sweeris and David Sakai. Brown won the Class A men's and mixed doubles titles in 1973 and '74.

Olivia Rohrbacher and Keegan Smith

Sandusky, Ohio; San Diego, Calif. | Tennis

Olivia, a junior at Perkins High, won the girls' New Balance High School Championship, in Cambridge, Mass., 6--4, 6--4 over Jenna Moustafa of Los Angeles. Keegan, a junior at Point Loma High, took the boys' title 6--1, 6--3 over Jaird Meyer of L.A.
