Louise Suggs 1923--2015
The LPGA cofounder died last week at a hospice in Sarasota, Fla., at 91. One of the dominant golfers of her era, she racked up 61 titles, including 11 majors, and helped start the women's tour in 1950. Suggs, who retired from competition in '62 but taught into her 70s, saw the women's tour grow from 14 events with purses totaling $50,000 to today's 33 tourneys offering $61.6 million. "Golf is like a love affair," Suggs said. "If you don't take it seriously, it's not fun. But if you do, it breaks your heart. Don't break your heart, but flirt with the possibility."
