Sports Illustrated HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Presented byTHE U.S. MARINE CORPS

PORTER MILNER, a center midfielder at Broomfield (Colo.) High, is known on the pitch for his signature flip throw-in, a high-velocity weapon that comes off a front handspring and has allowed him to set up goals from 40 yards out. Porter, who first learned to flip on the slopes as a freestyle skier, led Broomfield to a repeat Class 5A state title this season and was named the state's Gatorade and 5A boys' soccer player of the year. He's now teaching the flip throw to younger teammates, but that's not the only legacy the student council copresident and honors student will leave behind. Porter also volunteers with Circle of Friends, which pairs students with learning-disabled peers, and he eats lunch weekly with his designated buddy. "There's not really a feeling you can describe when you make somebody else's day," he says. "That type of human connection is special." For more on Porter, visit SI.com/HSathlete.
